Nowadays, the increasing awareness of the need to decarbonize the economy has put pressure on the power generation sector to reduce their share of CO2 emissions. In this context, gas turbines are the most robust, flexible, proven and cost-effective technology especially for distributed and large-scale power generation. A proven approach to decarbonize the fuel of gas turbines, and thus their carbon intensity is to mix natural gas with increasing amounts of hydrogen. As such, it becomes essential, yet technologically challenging, for gas turbines to operate on any variable mixture of natural gas and hydrogen including 100% hydrogen.

HELIOS will develop needed technology for hydrogen combustion as a global retrofit solution for existing gas turbines. The development efforts will be based on Thomassen Energy FlameSheetTM combustor platform.

The highly complementary HELIOS consortium includes five partners from three European countries: Eindhoven University of Technology (NL), Thomassen Energy BV, A Hanwha Company (NL), Centro Combustione Ambiente S.P.A. (IT), Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. – DLR (DE), Technische Universiteit Delft (NL).

Driving Technology for the Energy Transition

We had our first Asset Managers Conference (AMC) since the start of the pandemic, and our first ever “hybrid” event which meant face to face at the venue in Arnhem the Netherlands, and online via web feeds/webcams including an interactive option/possibility to ask questions to our Technical Experts and presenters.  We are delighted to mention that we have exceeded attendance expectations with many individual customers and business partners at our venue. Many online participants located in Asia or South America took the opportunity to join our conference, even being a European time zone event.

During our AMC we took the opportunity to showcase TEN’s  technologies/services and provided information about our developments & near future decarbonization solutions to our customers. Next to near future outlook, the audience learned about solutions implemented as we speak. The future is now and H2 solutions are ready for implementation and TEN is already executing several projects where hydrogen mixing in larger quantities is guaranteed. We also incorporated the Hanwha group (including our esteemed colleagues from PSM) offerings to show our customers our value (hydrogen) value chain, reinforcing to our customers TEN’s seamless integration into the Hanwha family, and their family into ours.

We received immensely positive feedback as TEN continues to surprise and amaze with the current state of our Hydrogen combustion developments. The event agenda included technical presentations, Panel Sessions like “Voice of the Customer” and “Low Carbon Market & Gas Turbines” , a customer workshop tour at TEN’s premises, followed by round table discussions to focus on specific industry and/or technology platforms highlighting topics such as; Service/Maintenance Execution Essentials, Digital Solutions Controls and Remote Monitoring, B/E class Upgrade Options for Aging assets and AutoTune demos. Several customers, representing jointly 60+ years “Thomassen experience” with full scope frame 5, 6B and 9E gas turbines services, took the effort sharing their experience with the audience!
