🚨 URGENT: ADVANCED DIGITAL SKILLS IN EUROPE 🚨 A pressing concern echoed throughout the panel moderated by the LeADS' coordinator, Brendan Rowan from BluSpecs , during the CONNECT University session on "How can the EU Boost Advanced Digital Skills", that had more than 650 viewers online. The session brought together Mylène Richard, Marc Durando, Martin Hayes, Madhumalti Sharma, PMP ®, Jack Hamande, Justina Bieliauskaite who brought attention to the critical need for advanced digital skills in Europe. Here's a recap of the insightful discussion:: 🔹 Emphasised the significant gap between demand and available workforce, particularly in areas like #AI, #cloudcomputing, and #data skills 🔹Discussed the importance of transforming #STEM education to address the declining level of knowledge and competence in STEM areas, particularly among young graduates 🔹Highlighted the need for domain experts to be brought into the fold and the importance of changing the mindset and thinking of people to adopt STEM careers, starting from the younger generation. On how to boost advanced digital skills in the EU, the speakers discussed several topics: 🔸 Upskilling current and future workers for jobs requiring digital skills through career guidance, shared resources centers, and measuring training programs' effectiveness. 🔸 Addressing teacher shortages and attracting more teachers through partnerships between schools and training programs. 🔸 Providing funding and certification for lifelong learning opportunities like microcredentials to help reskill and upskill individuals in areas like AI, cybersecurity and data science. 🔸 Transforming classrooms into maker spaces and inspiring more students, especially girls, to pursue STEM careers through hands-on learning and problem solving. 🔸 Recognizing that digital skills needs are constantly evolving with new technologies, and focusing on critical thinking over any single set of skills like coding. 🔸 Acknowledging the diverse challenges faced across education systems and industries, and emphasizing flexible, tailored solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. The European Commission informed about its plans to continue workshops and gather feedback to inform future priorities, with a focus on nourishing the Commission's thinking and incorporating diverse perspectives. If we continue business as usual, we won't get there." 💡 Says Rehana Schwinninger-Ladak, Head of Unit for Interactive Technologies (Digital for Culture and Education, DG CONNECT), during the CONNECT University session on "How can the EU boost advanced digital skills?". 🔶 Some key points from the speech: 1️⃣ EU's digital education action plan to address the ICT specialist shortage: 🔹 The EU aims to train 20 million ICT specialists by 2030, but current progress suggests they may only reach 12 million. 🔹The EU is taking a holistic approach to education, including initiatives like EU Code Week, to support the development of digital technologies and bridge the gender gap in ICT specialists. 2️⃣ Investing in specialised education programs for the EU workforce: 🔹The EU is investing in specialised education programs to address the shortage of skilled workers in key technologies such as #AI, #cybersecurity, and high performance computing #HPC. 🔹The EU aims to create an education and training ecosystem that is more interconnected and aligned to market needs, with a focus on digital skills for healthcare, energy, and other areas. 🔹The EU has launched the #CybersecuritySkillsAcademy and plans to expand this approach to other key areas, with a goal of educating and certifying over 10,000 industry professionals in four years. 🔹The Digital Skills and Job Platform Coalition aims to address the EU's shortage of 200,000 cybersecurity experts through umbrella initiatives and a one-stop shop for advanced digital skills. 3️⃣ LeADS on providing guidance for policy makers: 🔹It is important that policymakers at EU, national and regional levels have a clear understanding of the technological and sectorial landscape. 🗣 🚨 "There is no way that Europe would succeed in this shaping of the digital transformation (...) without having the skills and the scientists, the experts that we provide for that. " says Eric Peters, Acting Head of Unit, Digital Decade Coordination, DG CONNECT, to set the scene of today's CONNECT University webinar on "How can the EU boost advanced digital skills". ⚡ ✍ Other highlights from the speech: 1️⃣ EU Digital Transformation Strategy: - The EU aims to achieve concrete objectives through its digital strategy, including gigabit connectivity for everyone in Europe by 2025 and quantum acceleration by 2030. - The strategy mixes technical leadership, values, and concrete targets to build a future that is not just about technical leadership but also about values. 2️⃣ Digitalization and skills targets for EU businesses and society: - The EU aims to increase the share of businesses leveraging AI, big data, and cloud technology to improve competitiveness and quality of service. The EU has defined governance systems to monitor progress towards targets, including increasing basic skills across the population, and providing recommendations to member states and parliament. 3️⃣ ICT skills development in Europe: - Cybersecurity skills are crucial for businesses and public services, and member states must prioritize talent attraction and training to reach 2030 targets. - Austria aims to accelerate digital skills efforts, particularly for upscaling and rescaling, to progress towards interoperable digital information across Europe. - Concrete actions and stimulating discussions are important to reach the desired state of play in ICT specialists' attraction and training. #DigitalSkills #ADSforEU

Digital Skills are like the middle child - if they're not crying or the school isn't calling, then there's nothing to worry about. My favourite middle child, Advanced Digital Skills, is in need of some serious love and attention.
