Grateful for a good day of discussions in Milan 🇮🇹 to shape a relevant programme for the upcoming Enlit Europe meeting on October 22-24, 2024. Reflecting on our conversations, I'm compelled to share some thoughts: 1️⃣ At the 2023 edition in Paris 🇫🇷, concerns were raised about Europe losing its first-mover advantage in #climateaction due to 1) regulatory uncertainty, 2) lack of clear market signals, and 3) entry barriers for newcomers. This rings particularly true for the #flexibility demand management industry. At the same time, I firmly disagree with the overarching concern about regulatory #uncertainty. At least at EU level, the legislative framework is pretty clear on requirements and obligations to empower consumers with their flexible demand. The problem is that these rules are often ignored, hence the persistence of barriers in real life. Some of the replies to concerns 🤬 raised by #yellowvest or #farmers are already outlined in EU laws. It's up to EU institutions and capable politicians running for European Parliament elections to avoid EU laws becoming a mere theoretical exercise, without any impact on everyday life. 2️⃣ Electricity price #volatility is seen as a deterrent to broad #societal support for the clean energy transition. It's hypocritical to reassure consumers that extreme (high/low) prices are limited to #emergency situations. Volatility is the new norm and it should become an opportunity, instead of a problem. New business models are emerging to provide all necessary tools to consumers to navigate it, save and even gain money. 3️⃣ #Decarbonisation, #Digitalisation, and #Decentralisation are interconnected, mutually reinforcing pillars—not separate silos. 4️⃣ Clean #technologies must be paired with smart #functionalities and #services for their full potential to be realized. We can have thousands of #heatpumps in our #buildings, #electricvehicles on our streets, and electric #furnaces in our industries, but if their electricity demand is not flexibly adjusted, they might become a burden instead of a benefit to the clean energy transition. the journey to real Flexiblity EU market is still to be addressed, but messages are moving on, and one of the bascis will be to move from a Capex orientation to an OPEX one, and a real usage of Data FLows
Excellent summary, I fully support it Michael Villa. One important point is to get prosumers owning batteries or #V2X cars to realize dynamic prices are actually great opportunities to them which is the opposite of what incumbent utilities usually advocate for as they prefer to lock associated revenue to them to subsidize their gas peakers ! This needs to change as well as expanding associated concepts to Grid usage...
Point 4 is exactly why we need to have conversations on the "democratisation" dimension of the energy transition, as this process is about serving the needs of the people and hopefully build a better world!

1moThis was a great event and well organised and good exchanges. sorry about banging on about finance, but this is the 800 lb. Gorilla in the room. In order to get the Gorilla dancing we need to have scale, standardisation. The 300 to 500 Bio which only Europe needs are not the issue, but we need to get the capital markets involved
