What qualities make a good manager?
My main goal in writing Forbes Edge each week is to provide tools to help you grow in your career and find success. Your manager should have a similar objective, helping you develop new skills while challenging and inspiring you to accomplish things you didn’t think you could before.
In his recent story for Forbes, senior contributor Mark Murphy breaks down three qualities that make a good manager, and each of these traits is associated with making employees better at their jobs and helping them to advance in their careers.
Prioritizing employee growth: The best way to grow as a professional is to develop new skills, and a good manager should create an environment where learning is encouraged. This can include giving folks time each week to attend a training or online course, promoting mentoring programs that match employees with experts, or scheduling regular conversations between manager and employee where growth objectives are specifically discussed.
Removing employees’ roadblocks: A manager should ask their employees what frustrations or roadblocks they are experiencing, and be able to respond constructively. Frustrations stemming from technology, staffing, or the manager’s own actions are all valid, and if your boss is able to listen and act on the feedback, you’re probably in a good place.
Values matter: A company’s values should never be just for show—a good manager practices what the company preaches. Saying that you value collaboration and open communication is one thing, but by creating space where the team can elevate these values (such as in weekly meetings or by recognizing employees who embody these values), managers can build trust and a positive culture.
This is just the tip of the iceberg to Mark Murphy’s excellent story, which includes advice on how to spot these qualities in a manager during the interview process and what to do if you realize that you’re working for a manager who lacks these abilities. I highly recommend giving the full story a read below.

Self Care: How companies are addressing mental health in the workplace
One in three Americans say their mental health is negatively impacted by their work, according to the Society of Human Resource Management. Senior contributor Jack Kelly wrote recently about how large companies are adding mental health initiatives to build a corporate culture that promotes employee well-being. From global management consultancy KPMG’s plans for energy check-ins to identify and prevent burnout to Goldman Sachs’ mandatory mental health training for all VP-level or higher employees, there are companies taking positive steps in the area of mental health.
