Webinar Recording: Harnessing data in homes and buildings https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/energy-grid-management/harnessing-data-in-homes-and-buildings/ Tue, 02 Aug 2022 07:48:17 +0000 https://www.smart-energy.com/?p=125101 60-minute session

Since Google, Facebook and other companies located in Silicon Valley, showed the rest of the world the hidden power of harnessing data, attempts to replicate the success of the largest corporates in the world have been legion.

In 2017, the Economist published a story titled, ‘The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data’, which has seen a lot happen since globally.

End users have accepted the need to trade data for convenience and comfort, although the regulations have grown around the user privacy. Another important aspect is that data is now a target for many companies, either in the software or hardware industry. Some predict that hardware will become less important while software will gain importance, with data driving the change.

Furthermore, the once-off sales targets are shifting to subscription plans everywhere, thanks to Netflix and Spotify, based on data and services. The home and building industry does not escape from this debate.

There is a great opportunity for all the stakeholders involved in this industry, especially when tackling energy management, although there are some challenges that need to be addressed:

  • Data coming from different sources, applications, and vendors… complicate the task of processing it in the most optimal way.
  • The lack of standard interfaces imposes barriers for the software developers to extract the data smoothly.
  • A vendor-locked approach keeps the data in silos, thus not contributing to synergistic solutions that enhance the data compilation.
  • Security is crucial, and so it has to be at the centre of the equation.
  • The ethical usage of the data, and the need of offering alternatives where data is not shared while maintaining the level of comfort.

In this recorded discussion, contributors to the KNX technology talk about the problems faced by the new business models in the home and building automation industry and will provide their vision on how it can be solved.

Energy saving is no longer an option: buildings must manage it! https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/energy-efficiency/energy-saving-is-no-longer-an-option-buildings-must-manage-it/ Mon, 11 Jul 2022 10:49:33 +0000 https://www.smart-energy.com/?p=124210 According to the International Energy Agency, buildings and building construction sectors are jointly responsible for almost one-third of the total global energy consumption. The current energy crisis that Europe is experiencing is a call to action that cannot be ignored by the industry. Buildings have a vital role to play during their lifecycle, not only when it comes to energy saving but in managing energy to achieve energy efficiency.

Energy saving, imperative for buildings

There has been a shift over the past few years where buildings are no longer only energy consumers, they are now energy producers. With this new role in mind, buildings must manage the energy surplus and decide whether to put the energy in storage or charge the electric vehicles faster.

With electric vehicles on the rise and decentralised energy production becoming more popular, this is becoming even more crucial. Buildings and houses can also play a significant role in helping the grid avoid power outages, by being included in selective load shedding.

WATCH: How Digital Twin technology can help homes and buildings perform better
WATCH: Building a sustainable future for a smart living

You are invited to watch a recent keynote address by Joost Demarest, CTO at KNX Association, who provides an insightful presentation on how to tackle energy management with an approach to energy saving using a global, connected and secure international standard.

*Keynote from Joost Demarest, KNX Associations’s CTO, at FLEXCON 2022.

About KNX Association

With more than 30 years of existence, and with the largest interoperable portfolio of certified devices on the market (over 8,000) covering all the applications in the commercial and domestic building industry, KNX is in a prime position to contribute to the energy management need in buildings and houses. Webinar Recording: Building a sustainable future for a smart living https://www.smart-energy.com/industry-sectors/smart-cities/building-a-sustainable-future-for-a-smart-living/ Fri, 29 Oct 2021 15:54:04 +0000 https://www.smart-energy.com/?p=111688 60-Minute Session

To fully realise the potential of a truly smart city, the Internet of Things will play an important role in enabling the collection and communication of data on energy consumption that will serve as one of the foundations of energy management.

With urban areas being responsible for 70% of greenhouse gases and home to more than half of the population, KNX, using technology based on International Standards, is committed to transforming cities of the future into more sustainable ones.

In this recorded session, contributors to the KNX technology talk about the challenges faced by the Smart City, and how interoperability at the core of the ecosystem can flawlessly orchestrate Energy Management.

Four pillars of Energy Management:

  1. Energy Generation: Demand-side management to influence the energy consumption habits also falls under energy management practices that can be employed by energy suppliers.
  2. Home: Every household can adopt energy management into its daily activities and contribute to energy conservation, sustainability, and renewable energy production. Smart home energy management can improve energy efficiency, but it also allows each household to become self-sustainable with their own self-generated renewable energy.
  3. Mobility: Individual households also have EV chargers installed for their cars. Homes with the right technology can automate and manage energy consumption in combination with EV chargers. This way the charging of electric vehicles can be done in a more efficient way that does not interfere with the usage of other electric devices.
  4. Buildings / Infrastructure: Energy management can be taken to the next level by having various buildings or households capable of communicating with each other. This can be housing complexes, townships, or even large factories and industries. Such networked infrastructure of smart homes, buildings, and other setups provide the basis of a sustainable smart city.

Webinar Recording: Towards a European data space for energy https://www.smart-energy.com/policy-regulation/towards-a-european-data-space-for-energy/ Mon, 18 Oct 2021 09:51:28 +0000 https://www.smart-energy.com/?p=110346 120-minute session

Over the last few years, digital technologies have transformed the economy and society, affecting all sectors of activity and the daily lives of all living in the European Union (EU).

In a society where individuals will generate ever-increasing amounts of data, the way data is collected and used must put the interests of the individual first. This is in accordance with European values, fundamental rights and rules. Citizens will trust and embrace data-driven innovations if they are confident that personal data sharing in the EU will be fully compliant with the data protection rules.

Informed decision-making

The EU can become a leading role model for a society empowered by data to make informed decisions. To fulfil this ambition, the EU can build on a strong legal framework with its internal market and with competitive companies of all sizes and varied industrial bases. This framework should include data protection, fundamental rights, safety and cybersecurity.

If the EU acquires a leading role in the data economy, it has to act now and tackle issues ranging from connectivity to processing and storage of data, computing power and cybersecurity. To achieve this, the European Commission announced it will promote the development of common European data spaces in strategic economic sectors and domains of public interest, including the energy sector.

The time is now to gather input from high-level experts and policymakers on how this energy data space can be best designed and deployed in the EU.

What we will discuss

This live discussion will address:

  • issues with access, exchange, security and governance of energy-related data;
  • the preparedness of the energy sector to promote a higher availability and cross-sector sharing of data in a customer-centric, secure and trustworthy manner under a Common European energy data space; and
  • the role of data-driven innovation and of the cloud-edge technologies supporting the ongoing sector’s digital transformation.
