Eight floating wind turbines on WindFloat® foundations are spinning in Europe, delivering an average of 275 GWh of power to the grid and avoiding ~115k tCO2eq per year. With floating wind now poised for global expansion and already a force for decarbonization, the industry has the opportunity to chart a course that minimizes environmental impact, while maximizing benefits to the environment. To do this, the industry should account for the environmental impact of these projects across the entire supply chain, including fabrication, installation, transportation, operations, and maintenance, and the decommissioning / end-of-life stages. Leveraging 15 years’ experience designing and operating floating wind turbines, Principle Power has developed a framework to calculate greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions for current and future projects. This framework allows us to assess the base case impact in the different markets where we operate and identify the levers that can help to decarbonize future floating wind projects. 🎉 What better way to celebrate accomplishments than by gathering a few friends to talk about our successes at WindFloat Atlantic? Thank you, Asociación Empresarial Eólica (AEE), for organizing a visit to Navantia Seanergies’ facilities, where WindFloat Atlantic was assembled, and a roundtable under the “Programa Ejecutivo Eólica Marina” by Escuela de Organización Industrial. The roundtable showcased the WindFloat Atlantic project from the perspectives of the promoter, foundation and turbine technology, logistics, and fabrication, delving into the work of OW Ocean Winds, Principle Power, Vestas, Autoridad Portuaria de Ferrol-San Cibrao, and Navantia Seanergies. We were pleased to join this initiative with insights from Maria Clara Moura Santos, Vice President of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) at Principle Power. WindFloat Atlantic, commissioned off the coast of Portugal in 2020, stands as the world’s first semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm. Deployed with Principle Power’s WindFloat® technology, the project has been delivering clean, renewable energy to 25,000 homes annually. It has also withstood waves reaching a maximum height of 20 meters and wind gusts up to 139 kilometers per hour. WindFloat Atlantic serves as a benchmark for floating wind projects and provides many lessons that will support future projects. Thank you, all enthusiastic engineers, attending the event. 🇺🇸 The Pacific Coast states are progressing in offshore wind energy development: California has secured five lease areas off its coast, accounting for 4.6 GW, in an auction by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), and Oregon is looking at an additional 2.6 GW of offshore wind power potential. However, to achieve these goals, these states need to navigate challenges in permitting, supply chains, and grid infrastructure. To facilitate discussions, the Global Transmission Report is organizing the 2nd annual Offshore Wind Transmission West conference. Seth Price, P.E., Vice President of Technology and Innovation at Principle Power, will speak on how WindFloat® technology is uniquely suited to support the development of a cost-effective and efficient floating wind industry in the United States. WindFloat® stands out not only for offering proven technology that benefits from Principle Power’s experience across 75 MW projects, but also through its adaptability to the U.S. supply chain context. 🌟 "At the age of 18, I realized that my childhood passion for languages and dancing could lead to something more significant. I dedicated myself to learning two languages, embraced a job opportunity in tourism, and traveled as much as possible. Among the cherished journeys in my life is the one to Cuba. The music touched me deeply, infused with a captivating blend of Hispanic and African influences, that I couldn’t stop dancing. In my current role as the office manager at Principle Power, I have the privilege to engage with people from various countries and envision what it would be like to live by their cultures. But dancing has remained a hobby. Moving forward, I'm considering the idea of hosting dancing classes for my engineering colleagues. At first glance, it may seem like a peculiar challenge for an engineer. But why not? Dancing has the power to spark creativity and infuse people with positivity, fostering innovation."
