Emissions Control

Technologies to reduce environmental impact

B&W is an innovator and industry leader in providing advanced emissions control equipment and technologies for a wide range of applications. As an original equipment manufacturer, we have the expertise to effectively and efficiently integrate our solutions into existing plant systems, resulting in some of the lowest measured emissions anywhere in the world.

We can clean most flue gas streams of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), fine particulate matter (PM), mercury, acid gases and other hazardous air pollutants. We can also provide many of these technologies as a flue gas pre-treatment strategy for carbon capture systems, allowing us to provide near-zero total emissions.

Cooling Systems

Wet, dry and hybrid technologies

While wet cooling continues to be the most efficient way to cool plant equipment when water is readily available, dry cooling technology is becoming increasingly common as plant owners and operators look for ways to preserve water usage.

Our customized cooling solutions are engineered for a wide range of site-specific and project requirements, including high seismic and wind loads, vibration control, corrosion resistance, low-noise emission, sub-freezing operation, and seawater applications.

Ash Handling

Customized solutions and components

The challenge to effectively and reliably meet regulatory targets for ash handling has often required plant operators to make significant investments in equipment modifications.

B&W is a leading global supplier and manufacturer of cost-effective and value-added ash handling solutions with our Allen-Sherman-Hoff® (A-S-H®) ash handling product line. Combining the strengths, history and experience of these two great industry names, our extensive knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of various material combinations has made us an integral supplier of customized solutions.

Dioxin Removal

Innovative material for dioxin removal

Dioxins are highly toxic substances and can be formed when waste is incinerated. There are therefore very strict requirements set for their low emissions.

Through our GMAB™ product line, B&W offers ADIOX® technology, a dioxin removal solution which has been proven in more than 100 installations worldwide. The technology is effective, safe and economical for reducing emissions of dioxins in waste, biomass, metal, chemical and other industries.

BrightLoop™ Chemical Looping

Low carbon intensity hydrogen production

B&W’s BrightLoop™ chemical looping technology is scalable for a wide range of applications. The process produces desirable outputs such as hydrogen, steam or syngas, while isolating carbon dioxide (CO2) for capture and storage/sequestration or beneficial use. In addition to the ability to utilize a variety of feedstocks, including solid fuels, this innovative technology features a competitive cost of hydrogen while capturing a high rate of CO2.

Carbon Capture Pre-Treatment

Proven emissions control technologies to optimize carbon capture

Solvent-based scrubbing technologies, like B&W’s SolveBright™ process, often require reductions in various pollutants found in the incoming flue gas. Pre-treatment of the flue gas is vital for the operation and economics of the process to result in the optimum effectiveness of the carbon capture technology. We are experts in analyzing flue gas characteristics, then engineering and integrating the most effective emissions control system to handle the entire flue gas train.

Whatever the emission, B&W has a well-proven pre-treatment technology to meet required levels to optimize carbon capture.

Basics of ESP Operation

An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is an effective method of particulate collection in power generation applications. Its history dates back to the early 20th century. Of course, technology upgrades to enhance performance have continued for nearly as long. We have prepared a two-part article discussing ESP operation and some of the available upgrades and modifications now available for new and existing installations.

Upgrades to Existing Wet FGD Systems

Upgrading an existing wet FGD system may be an effective way to improve SO2 removal, allow the use of lower cost higher sulfur coals, reduce power consumption, allow for the use of an alternate, lower-cost reagent and improve the reliability of the system while reducing the operating and maintenance costs
